High-quality, sustainable plants through innovation

Amongst other things, innovation has brought us to where we are today. We are proud of our company and our staff. They know how to tackle their work, proactively suggesting how we can grow smarter and more sustainably, resulting in higher quality products.

We invest in precision farming within arboriculture. GPS is used for planting, pruning, root balling and undercutting. Using a soil scanner, we know exactly what the plot needs in terms of food and water, and where these are needed. Using a drone to scan our plots, we are able to count the plants and measure their sizes. We use an underground drip irrigation system to water the plants. We continue to invest in innovations, in order to achieve the best possible product.

Joost Sterke Plant Nursery

Joost Sterke Plant Nursery was founded in 1993 by Joost Sterke. Over the past two decades, the company has grown into a strong brand. We have a permanent team of fifteen motivated Dutch employees. Our company’s core values are quality, speed, service, sustainability and professionalism.

Tricolor Plant

Over the last few years there has been an increase in demand for larger-sized quality plants. In 2008, we therefore started a new company – Tricolor Plant - with two partners.

Tricolor Plant specialises in the cultivation of large uniform batches of hedge plants through the optimal use of mechanisation, for example, through planting and tending to the plants using GPS. The fields where we grow our plants are in Udenhout, but sales and shipping take place from the Haaren-based nursery. Please visit the website for more information.

Strategy

There is a constant increase in market demand for visually attractive plants and year-round supply. As a business, we have therefore expanded our product range considerably in recent years, allowing us to supply a wider range of garden plants, alongside our hedge plants, which have been very successful for many years. For the past few years we have been using a first-class field, where plants are grown in containers; this enables us to supply our quality plants not only as root balls, but also in pots. In turn, this enables us to supply our customers year-round.

Staff

We value a close-knit team that works well together, the reason why we are extremely proud of our staff. For years, we have had the same loyal team and, every now and then, students on day-release from college join our team.

Would you like to find out more about the work opportunities we have on offer, or perhaps you’d like to follow a course? Please feel free to ask us! We are always looking for good people.

Sustainability

We have taken a variety of measures to enhance the sustainability of our business. We produce our own compost and use the innovative ‘mulching’ technique. This technique means that our plants grow better, have reduced susceptibility to disease, there are fewer weeds and the plants require less watering. We also use weeding machines, which weed around the plants in the rows and also between rows of plants, which reduces the amount of herbicide needed.

GPS

Wherever possible, we use machines. Supported by GPS, the planting holes are drilled by machine, with the support of GPS. GPS can also be used for pruning, root balling and undercutting. Our sister company, Tricolor, which specialises in heavier hedge plants, uses GPS for everything.

Precision farming

We are one of the first tree nurseries to use precision farming. This allows us to give every individual plant exactly what it needs. We use a soil scanner to scan our plots and create our growing plan based on the results. For the most part, fertilisation is also in accordance with the precision farming method. We plant using GPS, which is commonplace nowadays, but we combine this with fertilisation. A dosing unit is mounted at the front of the machine that drills planting holes and then deposits a pile of fertiliser in the exact location of this hole. As you can see, innovation is core to our work here.

Drone usage

The company MLD Agro conducts the drone flights and processes images. Specific products have been developed for tree nurseries, which can determine the stock in each plot. During the drone flight, hundreds of photos are taken that are then collated in a ‘cloud platform’ to form one large map of the plot. Based on this map, the number of trees in each plot can be determined. The diameter and the height of each tree can also be calculated (amongst other things). By overlaying the planting scheme on these maps, it can be calculated (for each variety) exactly how many trees are available and the sizes of these trees. This ensures that accurate stock lists can be available to us quickly.
